| Although a hyrax sounds like a character from a Dr. Seuss book, it's actually a rabbit sized creature that occupies nearly all of Africa, and parts of the Middle East. Based on looks alone, one would NEVER assume these curious little fur balls are the closest living relatives to the elephant, and yet that is exactly how they are classified among contemporary zoologists. They share certain derived anatomical characters, but the joke of this painting is that the hyraxes have finally found a trunk to claim as their own. | |||||||||||||
